DESCRIPTION: Over 150 years ago, John Boot opened his first herbalist apothecary shop in Nottingham, England.
His effective herbal remedies became instantly popular and in addition to giving consultations & serving in the shop, John and his wife Mary prepared many of the remedies themselves.
However after years of hard work and ill-health, John Boot died in 1860, at the age of 45. Mary took over the management of the shop, with the help of her ten year old son, Jesse, who gathered and prepared herbs as well as serving behind the counter.
The Jesse Boot era
When Jesse reached the age of 21, he took over the management of the business. His focus was around cutting his prices and trying to offer customers value for money. By 1877 Jesse had opened 23 stores, was generating takings of £100 a week and was one of the busiest shopkeepers in Nottingham.
