DESCRIPTION:
In 1832, the Genesee Wesleyan Seminary was founded by the Genesee Annual Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church in Lima, New York, south of Rochester. In 1849, the Seminary created a companion college named Genesee College. In 1866, the trustees of the struggling college decide to seek a locale whose economic and transportation advantages could provide a better base of support, and three years later,Syracuse, New York was selected. In 1870, the State of New York granted Syracuse University its charter; two years later the - medical school opened, and three years later the Hall of Languages opened and an architecture program was added, one of the early US programs. In 1874, the university created a bachelor of fine arts degree and in 1876, it began offering post-graduate courses in the College of Arts and Sciences. In 1878 local banker John Crouse gave a substantial gift to construct a new college building. In 1882, Henry Leopold Elsner, M.D. (1855-1916) begans teaching medicin
